ROMANESQUE HOUSE

THE ROMANESQUE HOUSE is a two-storey house located in the immediate vicinity of Marafor Square, on the main Decumanus Street in Poreč. It represents one of the rare preserved examples of Romanesque residential architecture.

The house was built in the 13th century and was renovated and expanded several times. The last major renovations probably date back to the 18th century when the second floor was divided and a wooden balcony was added. This recognizable appearance therefore derives only from later extensions and cannot be considered an original part of the Romanesque house. Through restoration work carried out in 1926, the changes made during previous reconstructions were preserved.

Despite the numerous interventions that took place over time, the house has retained the fundamental features of Romanesque residential architecture. The plan of the house is simple and regular, without internal partition walls. The house is built of simple, roughly sculpted blocks. The window on the main facade is a typical Romanesque bifora.

Until World War II the building was part of a condominium that was destroyed in the bombing and was not later rebuilt, so today the Romanesque House stands as an independent building.

The last thorough renovation was carried out in 2024.

The building houses a permanent exhibition entitled "Living culture in Poreč in the 19th and 20th centuries". About seventy square meters of exhibition space spread over three floors allow visitors to enter the most intimate segment of the life of the inhabitants of Poreč, through the interpretation of the history of living culture.
